  • Dutasteride (trade names include Avodart, Dutas, Apo-Dutasteride, Duprost, Dutagen, Teva-Dutasteride, Veltride) is an urological medication from testosterone-5-alpha reductase inhibitors pharmacological group. This medicine is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or enlargement of the prostate gland in men; to reduce the overall risk of prostate cancer. It helps to control patients' symptoms, decrease urinary retention, and reduces the risk of needing surgery for prostate. Dutasteride is also indicated as scalp hair loss drug for the treatment of male androgenetic (androgenic) alopecia and female pattern hair loss; as a part of hormone therapy in transgender women. As other 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors like finasteride this medication is also prescribed for the therapy of hirsutism (excessive facial and/or body hair growth) and hyperandrogenism. Avodart works by preventing the conversion of the androgen sex hormone testosterone and lowering levels of a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is a major cause of prostate growth.
